HackerRank and Codility have been the default technical assessment tools for years. They work well enough for what they do: timed algorithmic challenges scored against test cases.

What HackerRank gets right

Credit where it is due. HackerRank built a massive question bank, supports dozens of languages, and has a proctoring system that works. For companies that need to screen thousands of candidates for generic software engineering roles, it does the job.

Where it falls short

The questions are generic. Whether you are hiring a frontend React engineer or a backend systems programmer, you get variations on the same algorithmic puzzles. The assessment does not reflect the actual role.

It tests the wrong skills. Inverting a binary tree and optimizing a knapsack problem are computer science exercises. They do not tell you if someone can debug a production issue, design an API, or write code that their teammates can understand.
